Everyone has busy schedules and because of this fact we try to avoid canceling and rescheduling campouts and events as much as possible. Weather is an eventuality we will always have to contend with.  It is important to not set the expectation that cold weather or rain is something to be planned around but rather prepared for.

 

Forecasted cold temperatures will not cause us to cancel or postpone campouts or events. However, should the forecasted overnight temperatures be below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, the leaders will conduct gear inspections to make sure each scout or crew member is adequately equipped. The Scout Moto is "Be Prepared". The only weather related change of plans for a campout or event will be due to extraordinary weather conditions such as Severe Lightning, Thunderstorms, Tornados, Hurricanes, Blizzards, Hail, or those weather events that pose life safety risks. Each campout will have an adult trained in BSA Weather Safety for those situations where adverse weather unexpectedly occurs.

 

It is up to each parent and scout or crew member to asses their own comfort factor with the conditions (weather or otherwise) of a given campout and to decide for themselves whether to participate. But keep this in mind; It's a rare day that is not perfect scouting weather. I've found that more often than not, unfavorable conditions make for the best learning experiences and usually the best stories. In point of fact, I really can't recall anyone telling stories about that one campout where the weather was perfect. All the great memories come from overcoming some adversity.
